Since his humble beginnings in the catering industry in 1982, DAMAC Properties Founder and Chairman Hussain Sajwani has achieved remarkable success, earning a spot on Forbes Magazine’s top 10 list of the World’s Richest Arabs of 2017. Today, Sajwani still plays an active role in the continued development and expansion of DAMAC Properties, in addition to giving back to the community through the mission of the Hussain Sajwani – DAMAC Foundation.
Meet DAMAC Owner, Hussain Sajwani
United Arab Emirates national and graduate from the University of Washington, Hussain Sajwani is the Founder and Chairman of one of the largest and fastest-growing real estate developers in all of Dubai. Prior to beginning this business venture, Sajwani started his own food catering business called DAMAC Food Services shortly after graduating from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in industrial engineering and economics.
It wasn’t long before this company was hugely successful, with U.S. military and construction giant Bechtel as one of its most prestigious clients. Despite this success, however, Sajwani saw an opening for expansion into the real estate industry when, in 2002, the Dubai government announced that foreigners would be legally able buy and own freehold property within designated areas.
Within a few short months of the passing of the Dubai Freehold law, Sajwani jumped at the opportunity and bought a plot of land, where he constructed a 38-storey residential building and officially established his new and most successful business venture, DAMAC Properties.
What Is DAMAC Properties?
DAMAC Properties is a publically-listed luxury real estate development company that trades shares on the Dubai Financial Market. With nearly 2,000 employees and a development portfolio of over 44,000 units, DAMAC Properties is viewed as the leading luxury property developer in the Middle East.
DAMAC is not limited to residential properties, however. The company also has a vast portfolio of luxury commercial and recreational developments, including the Trump International Golf Course Dubai, the Trump World Golf Course and Hollywood-inspired DAMAC Towers, which includes an astounding 3,975,000 square feet of built-up area, a high-end shopping plaza, business center, 1,200 hotel apartments, and another 824 hotel rooms.
DAMAC Fashion and Lifestyle Collaboration
Part of the larger-than-life draw of the developments within DAMAC Properties’ portfolio is due to Sajwani’s strategic partnerships with fashion and lifestyle companies and celebrities such as Tiger Woods, Versace Home, Fendi Casa, Just Cavalli, and Bugatti.
Trump World Golf Club Dubai, for instance, includes an 18-hole Championship Golf Course designed by U.S. professional golfer and celebrity Tiger Woods. This extravagant golf club, recognized worldwide, also features one-of-a-kind architecture designed by world-renowned architect Gil Hanse, as well as five-star amenities such as fine dining, a luxurious clubhouse and pro shop, pool, and fitness center.
Similarly, the award-winning DAMAC Residenze is an 84-storey residential tower that features stunning interior design by Italian luxury interior design house Fendi Casa. Combined with its sought-after marina location overlooking Palm Jumeirah, the high-fashion interior and elegant designs make DAMAC Residenze one of the top luxury apartment buildings in the region.
DAMAC Properties also has luxury towers with high-end interior designs by Versace Home, Bugatti, and Paramount Residences.
Perhaps one of the most well-known and extravagant DAMAC properties is DAMAC Hills, a Beverly Hills-inspired international golf community that includes mansions, villas, apartments, hotel rooms, and an awe-inspiring 3.9 million square feet of private parkland.
The community, which is centered around the Trump International Golf Course Dubai Championship Golf Course and its accompanying Trump-branded clubhouse, contains all the luxuries of modern living, in addition to extravagant dining and entertainment. Residents and visitors can enjoy convenient supermarkets, pharmacies, laundries, banks, clinics, and even a hospital and schools.
AKOYA Oxygen is another excellent example of how DAMAC and its owner Hussain Sajwani have been able to create luxurious micro-communities throughout Dubai. AKOYA highlights a modern push toward “clean, green” living — on 55 million square feet of development and centered around the Trump World Golf Club Dubai.
This luxury lifestyle community offers a unique blend of city living and a clean, natural environment. It includes over 10,000 villas and townhouses, more than 2,000 hotel rooms, two schools, a unique hydroponic café, and high-end shopping, dining, and entertainment.
AKOYA Oxygen is also home to the first-ever Dubai Rainforest dome, which recreates the tropical ecosystem found in the world’s natural rainforests. Although heavily marketed as a tourist attraction, the Dubai Rainforest by DAMAC Properties is also very much an educational experience for both children and adults alike.
What Is the Hussain Sajwani – DAMAC Foundation?
In addition to luxury property development, DAMAC owner Hussain Sajwani is also very much dedicated to social and educational charity missions, such as those supported by the Hussain Sajwani – DAMAC Foundation.
The Foundation is a joint venture by both Hussain Sajwani as an individual and his company, DAMAC Properties. It was founded with the vision that education and hard work are two of the most empowering skills that can be provided to children. Thus, the Hussain Sajwani – DAMAC Foundation has made it its mission to provide educational and learning opportunities to children and adults to help improve the livelihoods of Arab community members.
Just one example of the many education and learning opportunities that the Foundation supports is the “One Million Arab Coders” Initiative. This program is centered on the idea that computer coding is the language of the future and can therefore also be one of the most empowering tools that UAE can provide to its future generations. It involves a two-year course, during which students learn a variety of invaluable coding skills, as well as a specialized skill of their choice.
From humble beginnings to earning the title of one of the richest Arabs, DAMAC owner Hussain Sajwani hopes to set an example to not only his four children at home, but to all future generations of children in the UAE that education, hard work, and dedication can truly be a gateway to massive success.
